Cindy Nelson Announces Retirement
At the December Board of Education meeting the Board voted to regretfully accept a letter of "intent to retire" at the end of the 2016-2017 school year from Mrs. Cindy Nelson.
After 30 years of teaching at Avenue City Elementary School, Cindy plans to retire from the only school in which she has taught. First Grade at Avenue City has been her "nitch". She remembers when the mascot was the “4 ACES” from a deck of cards, when we didn’t have a school secretary, when Kindergarten was partial days, writing curriculum, rewriting curriculum, teaching whole language, phonics, student teachers, and classrooms before computers. More importantly, she remembers all the wonderful faces of the students she has influenced through her 30-year career.
It is impossible for administration to convey how much Mrs. Nelson has influenced our school and community. Her “motherly” demeanor, practical ideas, knowledge of content, understanding of child development, and heart of gold makes her shoes hard to fill. In her 30-year career, she has positively affected hundreds and hundreds of students. She not only helped them succeed at first grade material, she guided them to becoming responsible members of our society.
The process for hiring another teacher has started. The position must first be posted in-house before becoming public. When the position becomes public it will be posted on our website as well as other outlets.
