Subject: An Update on Missouri's Pilot School Ratings: What It Means for ACES

In the coming days, the state will be releasing preliminary letter grades for public schools across Missouri. Because we value transparency and trust above all else, we want you to hear directly from us about what these ratings are, how they work, and—most importantly—what they mean for the Avenue City School District.

Understanding the Pilot Rating

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is launching its first pilot A–F grading system for public schools, developed following an executive order signed by Governor Mike Kehoe in January. Here is what you need to know about this initial rating:

  • It is a work in progress: This is the first year of a brand-new state calculation, using test results from the 2024–25 school year. Because it is a pilot program, the state is still refining its formulas.

  • It will evolve: We fully expect the state’s framework to change over time, and as DESE adjusts its metrics, school ratings across Missouri will shift as well.

  • It is one tool among many: While state data gives us a helpful snapshot, standard testing is only one piece of a much larger educational picture.

Accountable to Our Community First

State metrics offer one perspective, but our primary benchmark will always be you. Through surveys, personal conversations, board meetings, and our Comprehensive School Improvement planning, you have clearly defined what excellence looks like for Avenue City. In partnership with our students, parents, staff, Board of Education, and community, we remain passionately committed to:

  • Fostering an Inspiring Learning Environment: Ensuring our schools are safe, supportive, and engaging places where every student feels valued.

  • Empowering Future-Ready Learners: Delivering essential foundational knowledge alongside the modern skills students need for lifelong success.

  • Developing Character and Leadership: Cultivating personal responsibility, integrity, and strong values in our young people.

  • Focusing on the Whole Child: Recognizing individual potential, prioritizing student wellness, and celebrating early academic and personal achievements.

  • Deepening Community Partnerships: Believing that education is a shared responsibility where families and educators thrive together.

The Bigger Picture

No single letter grade generated in Jefferson City can ever replace what you know as a parent. You see the dedication of our educators, the daily encouragement in our classrooms, and the tangible progress your child makes each day.

Our school district and other public school districts, have the privilege and responsibility of welcoming every student who walks through our doors—meeting children at different starting points and catering to a wide range of unique needs. That inclusive mission is fundamental to who we are. It is also why a single letter can never capture the heart of our  school, the growth of your child, or the tireless dedication of our staff.

When you see the Avenue City School District A-F grade remember - our core mission remains unchanged. We will continue working alongside you to help every student achieve their highest potential and prepare for a bright future.

Thank you for your continued partnership, trust, and support—we are honored to serve the Avenue City community!
