Cardiac Emergency Response Team
Avenue City School has taken a proactive and vital step to enhance student and staff safety by successfully developing and training a Cardiac Emergency Response Team (CERT or CERP team). This initiative aligns with the state-wide requirement for all Missouri public schools to have a cardiac emergency plan in place for the 2026-2027 school year.
The new Missouri law (SB 166 and SB 155) mandates that all public and charter schools establish a comprehensive Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP). These plans must incorporate evidence-based core elements, such as those recommended by organizations like Project ADAM. Project ADAM's affiliate programs specifically assist schools in setting up these protocols to ensure a swift and organized response to a sudden cardiac arrest. The school's staff training was directly facilitated and guided by the regional Project ADAM affiliate, Kaitlyn Bennett, BSN, RN, CPN (Program Coordinator) associated with Children's Mercy in Kansas City, leading the effort.
The key components of the mandated CERP, which Avenue City School's efforts are preparing them for, include:
-Establishment of a CERT: A dedicated team trained to respond to a cardiac emergency.
-Placement and Accessibility of AEDs: Ensuring Automated External Defibrillators are easily and quickly accessible, particularly in athletic venues.
-Staff Certification: Requiring appropriate personnel, including athletic coaches, school nurses, and athletic trainers, to be certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED use.
By developing and training their CERP team well ahead of the 2026-2027 deadline, Avenue City School is demonstrating a strong commitment to ensuring a "Heart Safe School" environment, maximizing the chances of survival for anyone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest on campus.
